Symptoms worth catching before the key snaps
- The key needs wiggling, or the bars loading up, before the barrel turns
- It sticks between positions, or won’t return from the lock position on its own
- The key goes in stiffly, or won’t seat all the way
- Water’s got in and the barrel feels gritty when it turns
- It turns, but the ignition doesn’t always make contact and the dash stays dark
A stiff barrel is usually one of three things: a worn key chewing away at the wafers, corrosion from sitting out in the weather, or general wear inside the barrel itself. The first is the cheapest fix and by far the most common. Ignore it long enough and it’s how keys snap off clean, which is a considerably bigger job than the one you’re avoiding now. Riders who catch it at the wiggling stage usually get a straightforward clean and rebuild, riders who wait until it seizes completely usually end up paying for a full replacement instead.

Not if we can help it. We rebuild the barrel, or key a full replacement to your current key wherever the bike allows, so one key still works the ignition, seat and fuel cap, exactly as it did before anything went wrong.
Usually not, provided nobody’s tried digging it out first with pliers or a paperclip. We extract the broken fragment along the keyway with the right tools, and in most cases the barrel underneath is completely fine once the fragment’s out.
