Barrel rebuilds, keyed to your existing key

    Motorcycle ignition repair in Werribee

A motorcycle ignition takes more abuse than a car one ever does. It sits out in the weather at the front of the bike, the barrel itself is small, and every rider leans on it a little extra when the steering lock is under load.

Ostan Locksmiths repairs, rebuilds and replaces ignition barrels at the bike, across road bikes, scooters and dirt bikes, from a light clean-out to a full wafer rebuild. Call before you force it again, a stiff barrel only gets worse from here.

What we repair on a bike's ignition and locks

Ignition and lock faults across road bikes, scooters and dirt bikes, all fixed at the bike itself, no towing and no dealer booking:

Stiff barrel, or a key that fights you?

That’s wear, and it only ever gets worse from here. We rebuild the barrel to the key you already carry, so nothing changes except the barrel working properly again.

    How it works

Bike ignition playing up? Here's how we fix it

    01

    Describe what the ignition's doing

Tell us the make, model and year, and whether the key sticks, needs wiggling, or won't turn at all. That tells us what to bring before we drive out.

    02

We check the barrel at the bike

We strip the ignition down on site to see whether it's corrosion, a worn key chewing the wafers, or general wear inside the barrel itself causing the fault.

    03

    Clean, rebuild or replace

Most barrels come good with a strip, clean and new wafers, rebuilt to your existing key. We only fit a new barrel when the old one is genuinely past saving.

    04

Test it and hand back one key

We test the rebuilt barrel on ignition, steering lock, seat and fuel cap, so you leave with one key that still operates everything it always did, tested before we pack up.

Call now and we'll talk you through pricing and timing for the repair.

Symptoms worth catching before the key snaps

    • The key needs wiggling, or the bars loading up, before the barrel turns
    • It sticks between positions, or won’t return from the lock position on its own
    • The key goes in stiffly, or won’t seat all the way
    • Water’s got in and the barrel feels gritty when it turns
    • It turns, but the ignition doesn’t always make contact and the dash stays dark

A stiff barrel is usually one of three things: a worn key chewing away at the wafers, corrosion from sitting out in the weather, or general wear inside the barrel itself. The first is the cheapest fix and by far the most common. Ignore it long enough and it’s how keys snap off clean, which is a considerably bigger job than the one you’re avoiding now. Riders who catch it at the wiggling stage usually get a straightforward clean and rebuild, riders who wait until it seizes completely usually end up paying for a full replacement instead.

    Getting Stiff?

    Catch It Before It Snaps

A stiff barrel only gets worse from here. Call now and we’ll clean, rebuild or replace it before the key breaks off in your hand.

Rebuild rather than replace, wherever we can

Replacing a motorcycle ignition barrel outright often means a new lock set with a different key, so you end up carrying one key for the ignition and a second one for the seat and fuel cap. That’s a poor outcome, and it’s usually avoidable.

Where the barrel can be saved, Ostan Locksmiths strips it down, cleans out the corrosion, replaces the worn wafers and rebuilds it to your existing key. You keep one key that operates everything it always did, ignition, seat and fuel cap included.

    Questions we get asked

    Frequently Asked Questions

Usually, yes. Most stiff barrels come good with a strip, clean and new wafers, rebuilt to your existing key rather than swapped out. We only replace the barrel when it’s genuinely too far gone to save, which is less common than riders expect.

Not if we can help it. We rebuild the barrel, or key a full replacement to your current key wherever the bike allows, so one key still works the ignition, seat and fuel cap, exactly as it did before anything went wrong.

Usually not, provided nobody’s tried digging it out first with pliers or a paperclip. We extract the broken fragment along the keyway with the right tools, and in most cases the barrel underneath is completely fine once the fragment’s out.

Yes. Scooters, including Vespa and Piaggio models, and dirt bikes are both regular work for us alongside road bikes, with the same strip, clean and rebuild approach applied to whichever barrel’s in front of us, no matter the badge on the tank.

Corrosion from weather exposure, a worn key chewing away at the wafers, or general wear inside the barrel itself. Bikes sit out in the elements far more than cars do, which is a big part of why this happens more often on two wheels.

Yes, that’s usually the same underlying fault as a stiff ignition, since both run through the same barrel and wafer set on most bikes. We free it, clean it out, and rebuild rather than force it loose with a screwdriver.

If they’re keyed together, yes, since a rebuild keeps all three on the same key. If your bike uses separate locks for the fuel cap or seat, we’ll tell you before starting, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
