Home / Ignitions & Key Extraction
Mobile auto & motorcycle locksmith, Werribee
Snapped keys extracted, worn barrels cleaned or rebuilt, and ignitions keyed back to your existing key wherever the vehicle allows it, at your car in Werribee.
Stiff, jiggling, stuck or snapped, tell us and we’ll tell you whether it’s a repair or a replacement before we arrive.
An ignition rarely fails without warning. It gets stiff, then it needs jiggling, then one morning the key turns halfway and stops, or snaps off in your hand. In most cases the barrel can be repaired or rebuilt around your existing key rather than replaced outright, and if a key has already snapped inside, we extract it without forcing it deeper.
Where the barrel genuinely needs replacing, Ostan Locksmiths keys the new one to your existing key wherever the vehicle’s security system allows it, so a mechanical repair doesn’t automatically mean a new key as well. If the actual problem is a lost or worn key rather than the barrel, see our car key cutting and lost car key replacement pages instead.
Ignition faults and key breakages, all diagnosed and fixed at the vehicle rather than in a workshop. This covers cars, utes and vans; for bike-specific faults see our motorcycle ignition help page, and our automotive locksmith overview covers every other car key service.
At Ostan Locksmiths, most barrels can be repaired rather than replaced, so your existing keys keep working. Call and describe the fault.
Tell us whether the key is stiff, jiggling, stuck or snapped, and the make and model. We give you a real diagnosis over the phone and an arrival time before we start driving.
No towing and no workshop booking. We bring extraction tools, barrel parts and key blanks to your driveway, workplace or wherever the car or bike has stopped moving.
Snapped keys are drawn back out along the keyway, never forced deeper. Worn wafers get cleaned or replaced, and a failing barrel is rebuilt or swapped, whichever actually lasts.
We turn the ignition, test the steering lock and confirm the engine starts cleanly before we leave. Wherever possible, the repair is keyed to the key you already carry.
Call now and we'll talk you through pricing and timing for the repair.

Ignitions give plenty of notice. If any of these sound familiar, it is cheaper to deal with now than after the key breaks:
The key needs wiggling, or the steering wheel lifted, to turn. It goes in stiffly or needs several attempts. The immobiliser warning light flickers intermittently when starting. The key has visible wear, thinning or a slight bend near the blade. The barrel has previously been forced or tampered with.
Any one of these on its own is a nuisance. Together, or getting worse, they point to a barrel heading toward a full jam or a snapped key, and it is worth booking in before that happens.
Key snapped in the ignition?
Pliers and force push the fragment deeper and turn a small job into a barrel replacement. Call us before you try anything else.
Not every stiff ignition needs a new barrel, and we will tell you which of the three you actually need, not just sell the most expensive option.
Repair. Cleaning, lubricating and replacing worn wafers inside the existing barrel. Cheapest option, and often enough when the key itself was the problem rather than the mechanism.
Rebuild. Stripping the barrel back further to replace tumblers and springs that cleaning alone will not fix, while keeping the barrel keyed to your current key.
Replace. A full new lock cylinder, needed when the barrel housing itself is worn, cracked or has been forced. Where the vehicle allows it, the new barrel is still keyed to your existing key so you are not carrying a second one.
We come to cars, utes, vans and motorcycles across Werribee, the Wyndham suburbs and Melbourne’s inner west, including:
Leave the broken piece exactly where it is. Do not try to turn it, wiggle the steering wheel, or dig at it with pliers or tweezers, all of that risks pushing the fragment further into the barrel or damaging the wafers inside. Call a mobile locksmith and we’ll bring proper extraction tools to draw it back out along the keyway.
Often, yes. A lot of stiff or hard to turn ignitions come right with cleaning and fresh wafers rather than a full barrel swap, especially if the key itself is the actual culprit. We diagnose which of repair, rebuild or full replacement your ignition needs and take the option that will last, not the most expensive one.
That’s usually worn wafers inside the barrel, a worn key that’s been chewing at them for years, or a mechanical fault building toward a full jam or a snapped key. It’s worth having it looked at while it’s still just stiff, a barrel on the edge of failing is cheaper to fix now than after it strands you or the key breaks off.
Not usually. Where the vehicle’s security system allows it, we key the repaired or replacement barrel to your existing key rather than cutting a new one, so you keep the key you already carry. Some newer transponder systems need the barrel and a key recut together, we’ll tell you which applies to your car before starting.
We come to the vehicle. This work and broken key extraction are both done at the roadside, a driveway or wherever the car actually is, using the same extraction tools and barrel parts a workshop would use. That’s how Ostan Locksmiths avoids towing a car that, in a lot of cases, still starts fine once the immediate fault is sorted.
This kind of repair fixes the mechanical barrel, the wafers and tumblers the key physically turns against. If the barrel is fine and you just need a working key originated, that is a separate job, covered on our lost car key replacement and car key cutting pages. We will tell you which one you actually need over the phone.
It depends on whether the ignition needs cleaning and new wafers, a rebuild, or a full barrel replacement, and on the vehicle itself. We quote before starting, and mobile work is typically well under what a dealership charges for the same barrel job, partly because there’s no towing or workshop booking involved.
If you are stranded rather than just noticing a stiff barrel at home, that is an emergency callout rather than a scheduled job. Call our 24/7 emergency lockout service and we will prioritise getting you moving, then sort a permanent fix afterwards.
